Catalytic Converter Thieves Caught on Camera in Lamborghini Urus Getaway Car

It might not be the most subtle getaway car, but it has plenty of room for the tools to do crime.

Catalytic converter theft is a tradition as old as catalytic converters, but thefts of the rare-metal-holding devices more than tripled from 2019 to 2020 and continue to be a problem across America. Some of that work is apparently paying off for a group of alleged thieves in Southern California, who were caught on camera showing up to the scene of a catalytic converter theft in a Lamborghini Urus.

Around 4am on 11/9/22, in the 3800 block of 184th Street, four male suspects exit a yellow Lamborghini Urus w/ black rims to steal a catalytic converter. In a video posted by the Torrance Police Department on Twitter Thursday, the thieves can be seen pulling up alongside a white van along a residential street. One passenger jumps out to quickly jack up the car, while the driver and another passenger quickly open the truck to seemingly grab tools. While one of the three stands as a lookout, the other two complete the job in about a minute. Once their loot is apparently secured, the van is lowered and the group jumps back into their Urus to drive away.

The theft happened at around 4 a.m. on Nov. 9, police said.

While it may not be the most subtle or forgettable of getaway cars, the Urus, which starts at $230,000, sort of makes sense for an enterprising catalytic converter theft ring. After all, it is the most work-friendly vehicle in Lamborghini's current lineup. Unfortunately for these particular bandits, a bright yellow Urus is also fairly easy to recognize on camera from the other side of the street.
